Roll Hoppers

At the end of the long school/work week we all look forward to movie night at our house on Friday evenings. Hence, 'movie night' has become a much loved tradition that we all look forward and hold fast to.
After our weekly catch-up around the dinner table, we then slip into our most comfiest, cosiest pyjamas' and then regroup on the couch underneath the warmth of a shared blanket (in the colder months) to escape together for a few hours to the wonderful world of (more often than not) Disney.
This Friday we couldn't decide what movie to choose, so while the kids were trying to work out what to watch I quickly channel surfed to see if there was anything interesting on the ABC. Mid-surf Hoover got a brief glimpse of George on MasterChef and shouted 'look mama, a cooking show!'
Uffa!
If you follow me on twitter then you would understand my complete and utter disdain for MasterChef as I loathe reality TV with a vengence.

Needless to say father and son began chiming in with Hoover and before you knew it we were all plastered to the couch, sitting under the warmth of late grandma Jeans crochet blanket - ahem, watching MasterChef.
Despite conceding to peer pressure and watching MasterChef last Friday I still stand firm in my belief that the show is utterly cringe worthy. Regrettably, Fussy and Stephen quite enjoyed watching George make his de-constructed version of a hamburger, whilst Hoover was quite engrossed with that goofy looking bloke and his pedestrian looking sausage rolls.
Consequently, the following morning Hoover woke up declaring that she was in a baking mood and that she wanted to make 'roll hoppers' for lunch. Stephen and I both raised a quizzical eyebrow and said 'sweetheart, what are roll hoppers?' Hoover replied, 'you know meat wrapped in pastry'. I replied 'oh you mean sausage rolls' and she replied 'yeah, roll hoppers'.
I gently said to Hoover 'why are they called roll hoppers darling?' She gave me one of those uffa-my-mama-can-be-so-daf stares and replied 'because they look like they can hop mama'.
I still don't get the hopping concept, but I do think the five year old did a spectacular job!

On a completely separate note, if you missed the interview I did earlier with ABC radio, here it is!

wow, she clearly takes after you! happy mother's day nanette! x
oooh I so want me some "roll hoppers" - what a clever gem Hoover is!
I'm so with you on MasterChef, haven't watch a second of it, so when do you get your own radio show?! ;-)
I completely agree! I've turned off Masterchef, it's 'throw the shoe at the TV' TV. Crappy!
Love your sausage rolls. I made chicken ones on the weekend too, yummy.
Great interview!
So nice to actually hear your voice!
We don't have MasterChef here but have a reality show called TopChef and also Chopped where chefs and amature cooks compete. I don't watch any of them, they bug me.
Hope you are well!

What a great tradition! Nice interview and next time I am peeling a kilo of pistachios I will remember that it's just roughage.
How about we both do our own radio show?!
I can't believe they're publishing a MasterChef magazine - what a waste of trees!
I'm all for a good cooking show as both the kids and I love to watch them, but MasterChef has taken over our part of the world and it really is quite exasperating!
I had so much fun talking to Kelli I almost forgot it was an interview!
Sarah I would never dream of peeling the thin layer off pistachios as who has the time and patience to do that! When I made the pistachio nut ice-cream I tossed them in just as, roughage and all!
Love the roll hoppers just wondering what type of pastry you would recommend for the rolls and I am assuming you do not cook the sausage mixture before you wrap it in the pastry !!- enjoyed the interview
I used Carême all butter puff pastry for the 'roll hoppers'. For the meat mixture I used minced beef and four pork and fennel sausauges that I took out of their casings. And yes I didn't cook the meat off before I put it in the puff pastry.
