Locally grown garlic in Coles

I would be at a complete loss in the kitchen if it were not for lemons and garlic. I am forever reaching for fresh lemons to squeeze or zest. Thankfully my neighbour has an enormous lemon tree in her garden so I am constantly supplied with fresh unwaxed lemons. If I happen to run out of lemons I can always send Fussy around to go pull a few off Corries' tree.
When it comes to garlic I am not as fortunate. I often have to hunt far and wide to find unbleached, locally grown purple garlic. My local green grocer now stocks it - I think he got tired of me complaining about the bleached Chinese stuff that gets passed off as garlic.
Well yesterday at the supermarket of all places I had an unexpected moment of 'gratefulness'. Hence, to my utter surprise there alongside the onions, shallots and ginger was locally grown purple garlic. I kid you not there was not a bleached bulb in sight!

Here, here. Garlic and lemons are essentials in my kitchen too!
I bought my Mum some mini lemon trees two years ago but she neglects them so much the fruit fell off and never grew back! She doesn't have much of a green thumb (although she's a good mother!) :)
Oh a Coles receipt! I can feel the nostalgia seeping in.
I always forget to buy lemons but garlic is a must and a staple. We also use only the beautiful purple garlic.
Fresh, non-bleached garlic...ah you are so very lucky. Very hard to find here in Memphis.
lt's funny, someone asked me the other day what three things are always in your fridge/pantry.
Well three is a stretch for me-my cupboards are usually bare! I'm an 'on demand' shopper since I live so close to the supermarket and markets.
But there are two things which I always have. Lemons and garlic. They are the essentials!
Luckily my sister on their organic farm grow the most amazing garlic and lemons. When I run out them I rely on the fresh produce market on Sundays. Supermarket lemons in my experience are horrid. Hard with squat juice! Nice to know Coles's are up to par.
Why do they bleach it?? Yes, I got a pleasant surprise seeing them at Coles too. I used to have to go to Markets for them.
They bleach it to make it look healthy and appealing because more often than not it's last years crop and has been cool stored for months.
Refuse to use it unless it's purple!
Maybe try growing your own, then you will have a constant supply?
A freshly picked lemon can't compare to a cool stored supermarket lemon!
